News of Lincoln’s Death Reported in Rare Edition
By Kathryn Wilmot, Newseum curatorial specialist
Near the end of the Civil War on April 14, 1865, President Abraham Lincoln attended the play “Our American Cousin” at Ford’s Theatre in Washington, D.C. At approximately 10:15 p.m., Southern sympathizer John Wilkes Booth stepped into the president’s box and fired one fatal shot to the back of Lincoln’s head.
News of this great tragedy quickly spread via telegraph to newspapers across the country. The New York Herald issued numerous editions on April 15, 1865, informing the public of Lincoln’s rapidly deteriorating condition. Six versions of these editions are part of the Newseum’s collection of historic newspapers, including a rare, four-page “Extra” that told of Lincoln’s demise at 8:45 a.m. — more than an hour earlier than other editions.
The front page of this “Extra” contains a telegram written by Edwin A. Stanton, the secretary of war, to Maj. Gen. John Dix.
“Abraham Lincoln died this morning twenty-two minutes after seven o’clock,” the telegram stated.
This edition of the Herald is currently on display in the News Corporation News History Gallery. A new exhibit on Lincoln’s death, “Manhunt: Chasing Lincoln’s Killer,” is open Feb. 14 through Dec. 2009.

The Nobel Peace Prize for 1991 to Aung San Suu Kyi of Myanmar
The Nobel Peace Prize 1991
The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided to award the Nobel Peace Prize for 1991 to Aung San Suu Kyi of Myanmar (Burma) for her non-violent struggle for democracy and human rights. Aung San Suu Kyi is the daughter of Burma's liberation leader Aung San and showed an early interest in Gandhi's philosophy of non-violent protest. After having long refrained from political activity, she became involved in "'the second struggle for national independence" in Myanmar in 1988.
She became the leader of a democratic opposition which employs non-violent means to resist a regime characterized by brutality. She also emphasizes the need for conciliation between the sharply divided regions and ethnic groups in her country. The election held in May 1990 resulted in a conclusive victory for the opposition. The regime ignored the election results. Suu Kyi refused to leave the country and since then, she has been kept under strict house arrest. Suu Kyi's struggle is one of the most extraordinary examples of civil courage in Asia in recent decades.
She has become an important symbol in the struggle against oppression. In awarding the Nobel Peace Prize for 1991 to Aung San Suu Kyi, the Norwegian Nobel Committee wishes to honour this woman for her unflagging efforts and to show its support for the many people throughout the world who are striving to attain democracy, human rights and ethnic conciliation by peaceful means. 1993: Group of Nobel Peace Laureates, denied entry to Burma, visit Burmese refugees on Thailand border, call for Suu Kyi's release, Their appeal later repeated at UN Commission for Human Rights in Geneva.
1994: February. First non-family visitors to Suu Kyi: UN representative, U.S. congressman, New York Times reporter.
September-October. SLORC leaders meet with Suu Kyi, who still asks for a public dialogue.
1995: July 10. SLORC releases Suu Kyi from house arrest after six years of detention.
In the last four years her movements have still been restricted. While she has had some opportunities to telephone her family in England, she is regularly denounced in the government-controlled media, and there is concern for her personal safety. Efforts to revive any NLD party activities have been balked, and its members have been jailed and physically attacked. In the first months after detention was ended, she was able to speak to large gatherings of supporters outside her home, but this was stopped. Yet her popularity in the country has not diminished.
Internationally her voice has been heard not infrequently. Reporters with cameras and videotape have been able to interview her in person, and telephone interviews with the media outside Burma have also been published. Using video cassettes she has sent out statements, including the keynote address to the NGO Forum at the U.N. International Women's Conference in Beijing in August 1995.
There have been a number of visitors from abroad, including a member of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, whom she told that Norway will be the first country she will visit when free to travel. SLORC has changed its name to the State Peace and Development Council, but its repressive policies and violation of human rights continue unabated.
Suu Kyi discourages tourists from visiting Burma and businessmen from investing in the country until it is free. She finds hearing for such pleas among western nations, and the United States has applied economic sanctions against Burma, but Burma's neighbours follow their policy of not intervening in the internal affairs of other sovereign states, and Burma has been admitted into the Association of South Eastern Asian Nations.
On March 27, 1999, Michael Aris died of prostate cancer in London. He had petitioned the Burmese authorities to allow him to visit Suu Kyi one last time, but they had rejected his request. He had not seen her since a Christmas visit in 1995. The government always urged her to join her family abroad, but she knew that she would not be allowed to return. This separation she regarded as one of the sacrifices she had had to make in order to work for a free Burma.

Aung San Suu Kyi-i Chanchin Kal Zel
YANGON, Myanmar –
Myanmar's junta alleged Friday that anti-government forces engineered an American's illegal visit to the house of pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi to embarrass the government and aggravate its relations with the West.
Authorities detained John W. Yettaw after he left Suu Kyi's heavily guarded compound earlier this month and charged the Nobel peace laureate with violating terms of her house arrest by allowing the American to stay at her home without official permission.
The offense is punishable by up to five years' imprisonment. Her trial began Monday.
Responding to anger abroad over the trial, Myanmar's Foreign Minister U Nyan Win was quoted in the New Light of Myanmar as telling his Japanese counterpart that the Yettaw incident was manufactured by internal and external anti-government forces — a term usually referring to pro-democracy groups.
At a time when the United States, Japan and the European Union were reviewing their policies toward Myanmar, Nyan Win said "it was likely that this incident was trumped up to intensify international pressure on Myanmar by internal and external anti-government elements who do not wish to see the positive changes in those countries' policies toward Myanmar," the paper said.
The paper reported that Japanese Foreign Minister Hirofumi Nakasone called on May 18 to express his concern about Suu Kyi's trial.
Critics have accused the junta of using Yettaw's visit as a pretext to keeping Suu Kyi in detention through polls scheduled for next year — the culmination of the junta's "roadmap to democracy," which has been criticized as a fig leaf for continued military rule.
Suu Kyi, who is being held at the infamous Insein Prison along with scores of other political prisoners, had been scheduled to be freed May 27 after six consecutive years under house arrest. She has been in detention without trial for more than 13 of the past 19 years.
Suu Kyi is standing trial with two female members of her party who live with her, and Yettaw, the American man who triggered the charges by swimming across a lake to Suu Kyi's property under the cover of darkness earlier this month and sneaking uninvited into her home.
Suu Kyi's lawyers have said she asked Yettaw to leave, but allowed him to stay for two days after he said he was too tired and ill to immediately swim back across the lake.
The trial this week has mostly focused on the motives and methods of Yettaw, a part-time contractor from Falcon, Missouri. The trial was briefly opened to reporters and diplomats Wednesday but otherwise has been closed.
On Thursday, the prosecution showed a video said to have been shot by Yettaw at Suu Kyi's house during his latest visit, according to one of her lawyers, Nyan Win. The video had a voice-over, apparently by Yettaw, which was translated into the Myanmar language in the courtroom.
"The video taken by Mr. Yettaw showed the portrait of Gen. Aung San (Myanmar's independence hero and Suu Kyi's father), a bookshelf and Mr. Yettaw himself standing in front of the portrait of Gen. Aung San.
"He was saying he is now in Yangon, at Aung San Suu Kyi's house and that he asked permission to film Aung San Suu Kyi but she refused. 'She looked nervous and I am sorry for that,' he was saying that, in his video," Nyan Win told reporters.
On Wednesday, 23 objects seized from Suu Kyi's house were presented as evidence, the most striking items being two black cloaks or robes described as being of a type worn by Muslim women, along with scarves to cover the face, two long skirts, and sunglasses.
Clearly implying that they could be used in an escape attempt, the prosecutor asked the police officer who seized the items whether "If a person wears this woman's Muslim dress and sunglasses, will you be able to identify the person?" The officer replied "No.'
Yettaw on Wednesday also offered the first public clue to the motive for his actions, suggesting in a courtroom exchange that he had a premonition someone would try to kill the pro-democracy leader, according to Nyan Win, who attended the proceedings.
His wife, Betty Yettaw, has said her husband wanted to talk to Suu Kyi as part of his research on forgiveness and resilience.

Aung San Suu Kyi-i Chanchin kal zel
YANGON, Myanmar – Pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi went on trial Monday, as hundreds of riot police ringed Myanmar's most notorious prison to block protesters from proceedings that could send her to jail for five years.
Suu Kyi, who has already spend more than 13 of the last 19 years in detention, has been charged with violating the conditions of her house arrest by sheltering an American man who swam to her lakeside home to secretly visit her earlier this month.
The ambassadors of Britain, France, Germany and Italy as well as an Australian diplomat were barred from entering the prison, but the U.S. consul was allowed into the prison compound since the intruder — American citizen John William Yettaw — is also on trial.
Suu Kyi's late husband was British, but she does not have British citizenship, though she could apply for it.
More than 100 Suu Kyi supporters broke through an outer perimeter of barricades around Insein prison in Yangon, but not the inner one that was closely guarded by armed police and government supporters. One young protester was seen being taken away by police.
Yettaw's family members have described him as well-intentioned and unaware of the problems he could cause by trying to talk with Suu Kyi, but her supporters have expressed anger at him for getting the Nobel Peace laureate into trouble. Suu Kyi's lawyers have said the 53-year-old from Falcon, Missouri, was not invited to her residence and that she told him to leave.
Nyan Win, a spokesman for Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy party and one of four lawyers representing her at her trial, said the court rejected their request to open the trial to the public and media "for security reasons." He added that they would continue to seek to have the proceeding made public.
"We are certain that we will win the case if it goes according to law because she didn't break the law," said Nyan Win, speaking at the party's headquarters. Courts in military-run Myanmar have rarely ruled in favor of Suu Kyi or any pro-democracy activists.
He said Suu Kyi "looks very fresh and alert just like before," and had asked the lawyers to tell her friends that she is well.
Suu Kyi had been scheduled to be freed May 27 after six consecutive years of house arrest, but the ruling junta was widely expected to yet again extend her detention period. International lawyers say this would have been illegal under Myanmar's own laws.
The latest charges are widely seen as a pretext for the government to keep Suu Kyi detained past elections it has scheduled for next year as the culmination of a "roadmap to democracy" which has been criticized as a fig leaf for continued military control.
Suu Kyi, two female party members who are her sole companions under house arrest, and Yettaw are being tried together for violating the conditions of her restriction order, which bans any visitors without official permission.
Yettaw is being tried separately for violations of immigration law and a statute covering swimming in the city's Inya Lake.
The first day of the trial heard testimony from police Lt. Col. Zaw Min Aung, the first of 22 scheduled prosecution witnesses, said Nyan Win. The officer, who signed the official criminal complaint on the case, laid out the prosecution's basic case.
"We call all political forces for Free Aung San Suu Kyi to mobilize all over Burma, by holding praying sessions in homes, places of worship ... and holding silent, peaceful rallies in front of Insein prison," said a statement from three activist groups. Burma is the old name for Myanmar and preferred by the military regime's opponents.
The groups included an organization of Buddhist monks, who were at the forefront of the 2007 protests, which were brutally crushed by the regime.
Security forces blocked all roads leading to the prison and police were stationed at key intersections in the city. Several hundred riot police, many armed with guns, batons and shields, guarded the perimeter of Insein, where the regime has for years incarcerated political prisoners.
Suu Kyi, 63, was charged Thursday with violating the terms of her detention by sheltering Yettaw, a partially disabled Vietnam War-era veteran.
Yettaw was charged the same day with illegally entering a restricted zone, which carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison, and breaking immigration laws, which is punishable by up to one year behind bars.
Myanmar has been ruled by its military since 1962. The regime lost democratic elections in 1990 but did not honor the landslide victory of Suu Kyi's party.
Her latest arrest has sparked a storm of international appeals to Myanmar's government to free her and to restore democracy in the country.
In Brussels on Monday, foreign ministers from the European Union discussed increasing sanctions against Myanmar, but also sought ways to persuade China, India and other Asian countries to press the generals to free Suu Kyi.
Sweden's Foreign Minister Carl Bildt said EU nations would pressure the 10-country Association of Southeast Asian Nations, which includes Myanmar, when they meet next week in Hanoi, Vietnam. Past efforts to cajole the Asian group to denounce Myanmar have failed.
However, in unusually sharp criticism from a Southeast Asian nation, Philippine Foreign Affairs Secretary Alberto Romulo said Sunday that his government was "deeply troubled and outraged" over the "trumped-up charges" against Suu Kyi.
Activists said there would be demonstrations Monday in about 20 cities, including London, Rome, Boston and San Francisco.
THE PIT
A man fell into a pit and couldn't get himself out. A Subjective person came along and said: "I feel for you, down there". An Objective person came along and said," It's logical that someone would fall down there." A Mathematician calculated how he fell into the pit. A News Repoter wanted the exclusive story on his pit. A fundamentalist came along and said," You deserve your pit". An I.R.S asked if he was paying taxes on the pit. A Self-pitying person came and said," You haven't seen anything until you've seen my pit". A Charistmatic came and said," Just confess that you're not in a pit". An Optimist came and said," Things could be worse". A pessimist came and said," Things will get worse". Jesus, seeing the man, took him by the hand and lifted him out of the pit. Unknown

Quotes About Aung San Suu Kyi
"She has in every way possible emulated what her father stood for, which was for the right of the people to govern themselves and to have a free and democratic country. Her stubbornness is her strength." — Josef Silverstein, a Burma expert at Rutgers University. (New York Times, June 19, 2005) "We unequivocally condemn this attempt by the junta to cloak its continued detention of Suu Kyi in a veil of legitimacy." — Jared Genser, an attorney for Suu Kyi. (Bloomberg, May 14, 2009) "Suu Kyi's struggle is one of the most extraordinary examples of civil courage in Asia in recent decades." -Norwegian Nobel Committee, 1991
Quotes from Aung San Suu Kyi
"I don't believe in people just hoping. We work for what we want. I always say that one has no right to hope without endeavor, so we work to try and bring about the situation that is necessary for the country." —TIME, Nov. 15, 1999 "It is not power that corrupts but fear. Fear of losing power corrupts those who wield it and fear of the scourge of power corrupts those who are subject to it." —From her book, "Freedom From Fear," published in 1991 "The concept of driving somebody out of their own country is totally unacceptable to me. They have tried to pressure me to leave the country in ways that no self-respecting Government should try." —New York Times, Feb. 15, 1994 "Whatever they do to me, that's between them and me; I can take it. What's more important is what they are doing to the country." —New York Times, Feb. 15, 1994 "I think corporations should give more attention to this suffering and should wait to invest until there is a responsible government in Burma. I do not think it is a good idea to separate economics from politics; in fact, I do not think economics can be separated from politics." —The Progressive, March 1997
Myanmar Democracy Activist Charged by Junta
Thu May 14, 6:10 pm YANGON, Myanmar
Democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi was charged Thursday with breaking the terms of her house arrest just two weeks before she was to go free, a move seen as an attempt by the military junta to silence its chief opponent ahead of next year's election.
The charges follow a mysterious visit to her home by John William Yettaw, 53, of Falcon, Mo., who swam across a lake and sneaked into her home seeking food and a place to rest.
Suu Kyi, who was scheduled to be freed May 27 after six years of house arrest, now faces up to five years in prison if convicted of violating the terms of her detention, said lawyer Hla Myo Myint.
The trial of the Nobel Peace laureate is scheduled to start Monday at a special court at Yangon's notorious Insein Prison, where she was arraigned and then held Thursday.
"It is nothing more than a political ploy to hoodwink the international community so that it can keep (Suu Kyi) under lock and key while the military maneuvers its way to election victory on 2010," said a statement from the National Coalition Government of the Union of Burma.
The coalition describes itself as the country's government-in-exile and has links to Suu Kyi's party. Burma is the old name for Myanmar and preferred by the military regime's opponents.
Foreign leaders, including Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, condemned the charges and called for her release.
"If the 2010 elections are to have any semblance of credibility, she and all political prisoners must be freed to participate," British Prime Minister Gordon Brown said.
In the past the junta — which regards Suu Kyi as the biggest threat to its rule — has found other reasons to extend her periods of house arrest, bending the letter of the law. Suu Kyi, 63, has already spent more than 13 of the last 19 years in detention without trial for her nonviolent promotion of democracy, despite international pressure for her release.
Early Thursday morning, armed police drove Suu Kyi and two women who live with her to Insein Prison. The women, assistants loyal to her political party who have lived with her since she was detained in 2003, were charged with the same offense, lawyers said.
The junta scheduled elections as part of its so-called "roadmap to democracy," but the effort is widely perceived as a guise for continued military control.
Parliamentary rule was overthrown by a coup in 1962, and the army has been in control since then. It held an election in 1990 but refused to honor the results after Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy party won in a landslide.
The party announced two weeks ago that it would consider taking part in next year's polls if the country's military rulers meet three demands, including Suu Kyi's release. While it has not ruled out participating even if the demands were not met, further action against Suu Kyi heightens the prospect of an election boycott.
Many of Suu Kyi's supporters were furious at the man who triggered the charge and faces criminal charges himself.
"Everyone is very angry with this wretched American. He is the cause of all these problems," Suu Kyi's lawyer, Kyi Win, told reporters. "He's a fool."
Yettaw was arrested last week for allegedly swimming across a lake to secretly enter Suu Kyi's home and staying there for two days. His motives remain unclear.
An Asian diplomat briefed on the case Thursday said Yettaw told the government he had gone there to pray.
"But the government doesn't seem to believe him," said the diplomat, who asked not to be identified because he was not authorized to speak to the press.
Yettaw's ex-wife, Yvonne, said he is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, popularly known as the Mormons, but she was aware of no connection between his faith and his activities in Myanmar.
Yvonne Yettaw, speaking from Palm Springs, Calif., told The Associated Press that her ex-husband lived on veteran's disability benefits, supplemented by occasional construction work. She said he had been working on a psychology paper about forgiveness after trauma, and went to Southeast Asia for research on that, though he was "real secretive" about his journey.
"I wasn't told why he was going, what he was going to do," she said, noting that he left four children, ages 10 through 17, home under the supervision of neighbors in Missouri.
She said that when he left the U.S. in April, he told her she would know in two weeks "whether I'm coming back when I'm supposed to come back."
"I think there was a possibility that he could get in trouble," she said.
Yettaw was charged at a Thursday court hearing with illegally entering a restricted zone, which carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison, and breaking immigration laws, which is punishable by up to one year behind bars, said Hla Myo Myint, a lawyer for Suu Kyi.
U.S. Embassy spokesman Richard Mei said Yettaw had no legal representation, but an English-speaking lawyer was being sought.
Earlier this week a pro-government Myanmar Web site said that on arrival at Suu Kyi's house, Yettaw first met her two female assistants — a mother and daughter who are her sole allowed companions — and told them he had diabetes and was tired and hungry. The two women were said to have given him food. Some of the details in the report on tharkinwe.com were later published in the state media, suggesting they were leaked by the security services.
"When the man arrived she (Suu Kyi) asked him to leave. She did not invite him in," Kyi Win, another of Suu Kyi's lawyers, told The Associated Press on Thursday. He told the U.S. Government-backed Radio Free Asia that Yettaw pleaded with her to let him stay because he felt weak, so she reluctantly let him stay in a downstairs bedroom.
The tharkinwe.com Web site also claimed that Yettaw made a similar secret visit to Suu Kyi's house late last year. The U.S. Embassy has confirmed that Yettaw was in Myanmar at the time and his 17-year-old son, Brian, said he had backpacked for four months in Asia last year with his father, who stayed two months longer.
_____ Associated Press writers Grant Peck in Bangkok, Maria Fisher in Kansas City and Edith M. Lederer at the United Nations in New York contributed to to this story.
